Darryl Strawberry congratulates Pete Alonso on breaking his Mets rookie home run record

Pete Alonso

It’s only June 23 and Pete Alonso has already set the New York Mets’ rookie home run record.

Alonso smacked a solo home run in the fourth inning Sunday to tie the Mets and Chicago Cubs at one. That was Alonso’s 27th home run of the season, which broke Darryl Strawberry’s team record for homers by a rookie.

After Alonso’s homer, the Mets released a statement from Strawberry congratulating Alonso on the mark.

“Congrats to Pete for breaking my record which has stood for a long time. What he’s done in a short period of time is most impressive. No goal seems out of reach. I wish Pete and Mets all the best the rest of year,” Strawberry said.

Now that he’s cleared Strawberry’s mark, next up for Alonso is the team’s single-season record of 41 homers. Todd Hundley (1996) and Carlos Beltran (2006) are tied for that record.

Alonso will have over half a season to try and surpass the mark.
