Come at Dexter Fowler, and you best not miss.
Speaking with the media on Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals outfielder fired back at president of baseball operations John Mozeliak over his recent comments criticizing Fowler’s effort.
“My effort has always been there,” said Fowler, per Joe Trezza of MLB.com. “That’s out of the question. These guys in here know. They’re the ones texting me, saying it’s bulls–t. I’m playing as hard as I can.”
On Monday, Mozeliak publicly questioned Fowler’s hustle and his energy level with the 32-year-old hitting a miserable .171 on the year and ranking dead last on the team in WAR. Fowler just returned from paternity leave on Thursday, which would explain the brief delay in his response to Mozeliak’s remarks.
The Cardinals, meanwhile, have been mediocre this season, ranking third in the National League Central at 44-41. They also still owe the former All-Star Fowler $66 million through 2021.
While Mozeliak has since walked back his comments slightly, it’s rare to see a public feud like this between player and high-ranking executive and obviously is not a good look for anybody involved.
