Report: Don Mattingly took significant pay cut with Marlins extension

Don Mattingly went from having his job status in question for much of the season to signing a contract extension with the Miami Marlins, and we may now have a better understanding as to how that came together.

Mattingly took a significant pay cut in his new deal with the Marlins, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. He was believed to be the sixth-highest paid manager in baseball with a salary of $2.8 million this season, and that number has been cut to somewhere in the $2 million range now.

The exact financial terms of Mattingly’s contract extension are unknown, and he refused to discuss them as expected. He had been in the final season of a four-year deal with the team.

The Marlins have won just 53 games this season with eight remaining, and their win totals have decreased in each season with Mattingly on the job. However, they have torn down their roster and been in complete rebuild mode, so he hasn’t had much to work with. The team likes Mattingly’s demeanor and the way he works with young players, which explains why he is sticking around. The reduced salary didn’t hurt, either.
