Ichiro Suzuki wants to play until age 50

Miami Marlins outfielder Ichiro Suzuki doesn’t see retirement happening until 2023 at the earliest.

In an interview with Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald that ran on Wednesday, Suzuki said that he would like to play until the age of 50.

“I’m not joking when I say it,” said the 10-time MLB All-Star.

“Nobody knows what the future holds,” he continued. “But the way I feel, how I’m thinking, I feel like nothing can stop me from doing it.”

The 43-year-old Suzuki is the oldest position player in the MLB and only trails Atlanta Braves right-hander Bartolo Colon by a matter of months as the oldest player altogether. While he will be entering his 17th season in the league after nine seasons playing professionally in Japan, Suzuki still produced well in 2016, batting .291 with a .354 on-base percentage.

Suzuki recently reached a major milestone in his MLB career, and plenty more are sure to follow if he indeed sticks around for another seven seasons.
