Jean Segura confident about transition to third base for Phillies

Jean Segura has never started a game at third base in his MLB career, but he is convinced that he will be able to make it work for the 2020 campaign.

The Philadelphia Phillies infielder got the start at the hot corner in Sunday’s spring training game against Pittsburgh and sounded confident about his play.

“Ah, it felt good,” he said, per Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. “It felt a little weird, but not too much. It felt OK. Not too bad. I was just rushing a little bit, trying to catch everything. I think the more I play there, the more I’ll get used to it.

“It’s my first game at third in my career, but I feel good,” Segura added. “So far, I’m where I need to be. I think I’ll be fine. When you play shortstop at the big league level, I think third base is not a big deal to play.”

The two-time All-Star Segura has been a shortstop for his entire career, save for one season with Arizona in 2016 where he played primarily at second. Philadelphia brought in Didi Gregorius this winter to play short though, meaning that the rest of the infield will have to adapt.

There are many players who have successfully toggled between short and third recently, and the 29-year-old Segura thinks he can add his name to that list.
