Report: Mets, Twins have discussed Noah Syndergaard trade

The New York Mets are entertaining the possibility of trading Noah Syndergaard prior to next Wednesday’s deadline, and the Minnesota Twins are one of the teams they have had discussions with.

La Valle E Neal. III of the Star Tribune reports that the Twins have talked with the Mets about Syndergaard, but New York’s asking price appears to be a bit too high. Teams that have engaged in trade discussions with the Twins have asked about their two top prospects, shortstop Royce Lewis and outfielder Alex Kirilloff, and the Mets reportedly want both in a potential Syndergaard deal.

Syndergaard is under team control through 2021, and one of the reasons the Mets are open to trading him is they think they can get a massive haul in return. They would probably want at least one MLB-ready player in addition to Minnesota’s two top prospects, which makes a deal seem unlikely at this point.

The Twins have been linked to several top starting pitchers heading into the deadline, so it would not be a surprise if they make a big addition to their rotation. That also means they have other options outside of Syndergaard, which could force the Mets to either lower their asking price or look elsewhere.

Syndergaard has struggled this season to the tune of a 7-5 record and a 4.33 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP. He was the subject of trade rumors last year as well, and he had a funny reaction to all the speculation this week.
