New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso got a victory Sunday before the first pitch had even been thrown during the team’s game at Coors Field in Denver, Co. against the Colorado Rockies.
Alonso found himself locked in a classic national anthem standoff with Colorado pitcher Zach Agnos prior to Sunday’s game. Agnos blinked first and headed back to his own dugout, prompting Alonso to do his kick celebration after winning the standoff.

We usually get a good standoff or two every season, sometimes involving multiple players. This one was a simple one-on-one battle that Alonso came out on top of.
It is insult to injury for the Rockies. Some would probably make the joke that it is a sad fact of life that they can’t even win a national anthem standoff given all the on-field losing they have endured this season. At least they got the last laugh over someone recently.
Alonso has been hot lately with 11 RBIs in his last five games entering play Sunday. That hot streak extends to this sort of thing, apparently.
