Shohei Ohtani’s contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers has been all the talk over the last few days, and things hit a new level on Monday when we learned the details about the two-way star’s deferrals.
Ohtani has chosen to earn just $2 million per year during the 10 years of his contract. He will be paid $68 million per year from 2034-2043, which is after his 10 years with the Dodgers is scheduled to end. However, Ohtani’s contract will still count for $46 million per year against the luxury tax from 2024-2033.
Ohtani structured his contract this way to give the Dodgers the best opportunity to build a championship team. He wants the team to use the money it gained from his savings to spend on other top players.
Naturally, the structure of the contract led many people to wonder whether it was legal. Though MLB’s Collective Bargaining Agreement with the players’ union allows for unlimited amounts of deferred money, people still had plenty of jokes and questions.
A user on X created the most fitting video regarding the situation. The person did a remix of a scene from “The Wolf of Wall Street” that captures the entire situation perfectly.
Enjoy.
