Baseball, Bill Miller, screw ups, umpires

Umpire loudly curses on hot mic after missing call in Red Sox-Twins game

Jarren Duran sliding into home plate

Umpire Bill Miller was certainly disappointed in his own performance during Friday’s game between the Boston Red Sox and the Minnesota Twins.

Miller was behind home plate for the contest at Fenway Park in Boston, Mass. During the eighth inning, Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran slid into home plate off a single by Rafael Devers. Duran was called safe at the plate by Miller but was pretty clear out.

Take a look at the clip at the link here.

The Twins would challenge the call, which was ultimately reversed upon review. Miller announced the verdict and then proceeded to loudly curse on his hot mic.

“F–k!” Miller could be heard saying. “F–king saw that too, g–dammit.”

You can see the video of Miller’s hot-mic moment here (but obviously beware of the foul language).

Miller, 57, has been an MLB umpire since 1997 as well as a crew chief since 2014 (working five World Series, three World Baseball Classics, and two MLB All-Star games along the way). Mistakes will inevitably happen from time to time (especially over a career that long), and at least Miller was more than willing to own up to his foul-up during Friday’s game, which the Red Sox ended up winning 6-1.

That said, MLB figures have generally had pretty bad luck this season when it comes to live microphones during games. You may recall that New York Mets announcer Keith Hernandez also had an embarrassing moment with a hot mic during a game a few weeks ago.
