An American-born former college basketball player has been arrested in Indonesia for allegedly smuggling drugs into the country.
Jarred Shaw, a Dallas native and former player for Oklahoma State and Utah State, was arrested in Jakarta last week after law enforcement allegedly found 132 pieces of cannabis candies in his apartment, via Scooby Axson of USA Today. The candies were shipped to Shaw from Thailand, and were intercepted by authorities in the mail.
The charges carry a minimum six-year sentence, but Soekarno-Hatta Airport police chief Ronald Sipayung said Shaw could face a life sentence or even the death penalty if found guilty.
The 34-year-old averaged 14.2 points per game during his two-year career at Utah State between 2013 and 2015. He was selected 18th in the 2015 NBA Development League draft by the Santa Cruz Warriors, but never played in the NBA.
Shaw has played overseas in Japan, Mexico, and Uruguay, among other countries. He most recently played for Indonesia’s Tangerang Hawks, but has been banned from the Indonesian Basketball Association following his arrest. He was an IBL All-Star in 2024, and won an IBL championship in 2023 while playing for Prawira Bandung.
