LeBron James didn’t let any past beefs get in the way of him drafting players for his All-Star team.
James and Stephen Curry are captains for two different All-Star teams that will compete in the All-Star Game next month. They held a draft in secrecy Thursday during which they picked their rosters. James got the first pick in the first round, while Curry got the first pick in the second round. In the first round they chose starters, then they took reserves in the second round.
The most notable pick may have been James drafting his former Cavaliers teammate, Kyrie Irving, even though the two supposedly had some friction that led to Irving demanding a trade. Despite that, James called drafting Irving an “easy choice.”
“I just tried to pick the best available players. To be able to team up back with Kyrie it’s always special — along with Kevin Love. For us to have another weekend to bring back some of the memories that we had when we were all together … Kyrie was available on the draft board. He’s one of the best point guards that we have in our league. So it was an easy choice for me,” James said in an interview with TNT’s Ernie Johnson.
James landing Kevin Love as one of his reserves was big because he had previously said he couldn’t promise Love anything.
Curry got two of his Golden State Warriors teammates but not Durant. There is speculation that James took Durant with the first pick, preventing the opportunity for Steph to get him.
