It’s been a widely-held believe that DeMarcus Cousins’s stay with Golden State will last a year as he rehabilitates his value, then goes off and signs a long-term deal elsewhere. But general manager Bob Myers wants to keep all options on the table.
Myers said Friday that he was keeping everything on the table for Cousins’s future beyond 2019, noting that at this time last year luring the star center was little more than a pipe dream.
“Options are open, Pap, like anything,” Myers told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Greg Papa on Friday, via Marcus White of NBC Sports. “If you would’ve asked me a year ago before this if he was gonna be an option for us, I’d say, ‘No way, that’s crazy!’ But he came. He came for a lot less than [what] his market value was.
“These type of predictions — good or bad — are pretty fruitless because you just don’t know. You don’t know what’s going to be going on on July 1, 2019. You don’t know if it’s going to be better than you think … but it’s not going to be what you think. So, with a guy like DeMarcus, who knows? If he wants to come back, let’s bring him back.”
Cousins, who is still recovering from an Achilles tear, is slowly moving toward a return. Coach Steve Kerr admitted that Cousins would almost certainly leave Golden State after one year recently, but Myers wants to keep some leverage just in case something funny happens.
