Kyle Whittingham has finally addressed a comment he made about quarterback Bryce Underwood after the Michigan Wolverines’ close Week 1 win over the Western Michigan Broncos.
Underwood’s job as Michigan’s starting quarterback was suddenly in question after Whittingham said it’s a role that isn’t “infinite.”
On Saturday, Whittingham cleared the air on his previous statement on Underwood.
“I was asked if his job was infinitely and etched in stone. Whose job is ever etched in stone?” Whittingham said after Michigan’s 17-10 victory over the No. 11 Oklahoma Sooners at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich., via Adam Rittenberg of ESPN.
“So that was my answer. … I don’t agree that I opened that can of worms because Bryce is our quarterback, and that’s where we are right now.”
Underwood let a lot of people down and got himself relentlessly ridiculed by fans after an ugly performance in the Wolverines’ 13-12 win over Western Michigan at Michigan Stadium.
Even though he threw the game-winning touchdown, he was largely ineffective in a game Michigan was expected by many to win while barely breaking a sweat.
But Underwood was back under center in Week 2’s matchup against the Sooners, and put up a much cleaner performance against a more dangerous opponent. He rushed 18 times for 87 rushing yards and a touchdown, as the Wolverines relied mostly on their ground attack to thwart Oklahoma.
Michigan improves to 2-0 overall with its takedown of the Sooners, as it now turns its focus on a Sept. 19 game against the UTEP Miners at Michigan Stadium.
