Lincoln Riley not happy about Texas using fired Kansas coach for help

Lincoln Riley

Texas is looking to win its first Big 12 conference championship since 2009 this weekend and spoil Oklahoma’s bid for a College Football Playoff spot in the process, and they have brought in a secret weapon to help with their preparations. Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley does not seem thrilled about that.

Earlier in the week, Riley was asked about Texas head coach Tom Herman bringing in former Kansas coach David Beaty ahead of the Big 12 championship. While he acknowledged that there is no rule against it, Riley made it clear he would prefer if teams didn’t do that.

“Coach Beaty can do what he wants to do. I don’t like the precedent of it, of being able to bring in somebody from a league in the same year,” Riley said. “I don’t think that’s good for the conference. But it’s not against the rules, and if they want to do it, that’s fine.”

Beaty was fired after winning only six games in four seasons with Kansas, but his team scored 40 on Oklahoma two weeks ago. Texas may not need a ton of help in that department after putting up 48 on the Sooners in their win over them earlier this year, but any advantage is worth exploring.

Between Texas bringing in Beaty and the dialogue we have seen between quarterbacks this week, there is a lot to look forward to with Saturday’s big game.
