Malik Rosier’s starting QB job could be in jeopardy
Malik Rosier’s role as the starting quarterback of Miami could be in jeopardy following the team’s Week 1 loss to LSU.
The Hurricanes were defeated by the Tigers on Sunday 33-17 in the season opener for both teams. During the game, Rosier completed just 15-of-35 passes for 259 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. It was the third game in row, dating back to last season, in which Rosier struggled.
On Tuesday, Rosier wasn’t the only quarterback to receive reps with the first team offense. Redshirt freshmen N’Kosi Perry and Cade Weldon also worked with the first string. According to offensive coordinator Thomas Brown, Miami wants to have competition at all positions, not just quarterback.
“I think we definitely need more competition when it comes to that,” Brown said, via 247 Sports. “Not just with him, everywhere. I have said that from Day 1 whether we have been winning or not winning. No one’s job is ever safe. It’s a competitive environment and we need to do a good job of putting guys in a spot where they can compete and push guys.”
Rosier helped guide the Hurricanes to a 10-3 record last season. However, his last three starts have been disappointing. Miami has lost all three games, including a 38-3 loss to Clemson in last year’s ACC Championship Game.
Hopes were high for Miami entering the season. The Hurricanes were ranked No. 8 in both the preseason Associated Press and Coaches polls. Rosier developed goodwill with his start to last season. Given his recent string of performances, and the team preaching competition, it’s reasonable to wonder how long he will hold on to the starting gig if Rosier’s struggles continue.
