Marvin Lewis, Antonio Pierce named co-defensive coordinators at Arizona State
The Arizona State Sun Devils have some recognizable names working as defensive coordinators for them.
Arizona State announced on Tuesday that they have named Marvin Lewis and Antonio Pierce co-defensive coordinators.
The announcement comes the same day that we learned previous defensive coordinator Tony White was leaving to take the defensive coordinator job at Syracuse.
Lewis joined Herm Edwards’ staff last year as an advisor and served as an interim defensive backs coach for their bowl game. The 61-year-old was the Cincinnati Bengals’ head coach for 16 seasons. He was a highly-successful defensive coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens the six years prior to his Bengals tenure. Lewis was interviewed for the Dallas Cowboys head coaching job that went to Mike McCarthy.
Pierce, 41, played linebacker in the NFL from 2001-2009 with the Redskins and Giants. He then coached at his alma mater, nationally-known powerhouse Long Beach Poly, and joined ASU as a linebackers coach under Edwards in 2018.
The Arizona State coaching has succeeded in recruiting the talent-rich area of Southern California, with Pierce using his contacts and experience in the area to help them land recruits.
