Tom Herman is getting back into coaching after a year away, though it will not be in a head job.
Herman is joining the Florida State Seminoles staff for 2026, according to Matt LaSerre of On3. He will reportedly work as a member of the team’s support staff, though his specific role is not yet clear.

It was not that long ago that Herman was one of the most coveted names in coaching. He gained plaudits as Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator at Ohio State and parlayed that into the head coaching job at Houston, where he went 22-4 over two seasons. That was enough to propel him to the Texas Longhorns, where he went 32-18 but failed to re-establish the school as a national championship contender.
After leaving Texas, Herman briefly worked as an NFL assistant, then took over at Florida Atlantic. He went just 6-16 there and was fired during the 2024 campaign.
The Seminoles will be looking to rebound in 2026 after last year’s disappointing 5-7 campaign. Another poor season might be enough to cost embattled head coach Mike Norvell his job.
