Report: Ben Roethlisberger could miss ‘extended time’ if full knee repair is needed

Ben-Roethlisberger

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger underwent a procedure on his knee Monday morning, and there’s a chance he could return as soon as Week 9 after the team’s bye. But one report claims he could miss more time if another surgery is needed.

According to Bleacher Report’s Jason Cole, Roethlisberger will likely miss a “few weeks at most.” However, Cole notes there is a chance he could need a procedure similar to the one Adrian Peterson had earlier this season, which is expected to keep the Minnesota Vikings running back out for the remainder of the year.

Roethlisberger had arthroscopic surgery on Monday, which is considered more of a cleanup procedure where doctors cut away the part of the tendon that is torn. If all goes to plan, Big Ben should only miss next week’s game. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said in a statement Monday that the injury is not considered long-term.

Even if Roethlisberger winds up needing another surgery on his meniscus, he has a history of playing through injuries. In fact, he played through a very painful one in the postseason last year. If Roethlisberger has a choice, he would likely wait until the end of the season to have any procedure that would require a lengthy recovery period.
