Chiefs teammates got into fight at end of loss to Chargers

The Kansas City Chiefs did not get off on the right foot on Friday night in Brazil.

Not only did the Chiefs fall to the Los Angeles Chargers, 27-21, but they also lost wide receiver Xavier Worthy to a shoulder injury just three plays into the game after he collided with tight end Travis Kelce.

Adding insult to injury, temperatures boiled over late in the contest with linebacker Drue Tranquill and superstar defensive lineman Chris Jones sniping at each other. The exchange came after Jones appeared to miss his assignment, leading to a big Chargers gain.

After the loss, a banged-up Tranquill chalked the exchange up to competitive emotions.

“Emotions are just high,” he told The Athletic. “We’re all competitive. We all want to win. And so we were just discussing what happened on the play, and emotions were just high.”

Although he stopped short of sharing what was said, Tranquill doesn’t believe the incident will tarnish his relationship with Jones.

“Chris is a great player. I’m not sure what happened. I haven’t seen the tape over there,” he said. “But we’re teammates, man. We’re brothers. It’s just an emotional moment. We’ve had it before in the past. That’s my guy. We’ll be all right. We’ll get better from it.”

During his postgame press conference, Jones acknowledged his mistake and shouldered the blame. However, when asked about Tranquill, the six-time All-Pro was a little chilly.

“No comment,” he said.

Kansas City has a multitude of issues that need to be sorted out immediately. It gets late early in the NFL, and 31 other teams will begin to smell blood in the water.
