Cowboys All-Pro in danger of getting hit with $500,000 salary cut

Dallas Cowboys star Trevon Diggs is facing a potential salary cut of half a million dollars for missing parts of the team’s offseason workouts.

The All-Pro cornerback suffered a serious left knee injury in a Week 14 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in December and was forced to miss the rest of the Cowboys’ 2024 season. According to ESPN’s Todd Archer, Diggs has opted to conduct his injury rehab in Miami rather than have the Cowboys’ medical staff spearhead it in Dallas.

Diggs has reportedly snubbed offseason team activities for the past three weeks. That tidbit is significant, given that Diggs would lose $500,000 in base salary if he does not participate in 84.375% of the team’s offseason program. Though Dallas’ offseason workouts are voluntary, the Cowboys have included de-escalator clauses in player contracts over the past several years, and Diggs was no exception.

Diggs also missed all but two games of the 2023 season after tearing his ACL in practice. An injury to the same knee was what ended his 2024 campaign.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones acknowledged that Diggs has been “working hard” to rehab his knee. But Jones also implied that Diggs may not have taken his 2023 rehab process as seriously.

With Diggs’ recovery not under the supervision of the Cowboys’ medical staff, it’s understandable that the team would feel a sense of worry about their $97 million asset.
