Report: Dak Prescott would need ‘prolonged slump’ for Tony Romo to start

Dak Prescott

Dak Prescott had the worst game of his NFL career in a loss to the New York Giants last weekend, but that did not leave the rookie quarterback in any type of danger of losing his job.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Sunday that it would take an “awful lot” for Tony Romo to take back his old starting role.

“From my understanding it would take a prolonged slump from Dak Prescott in order to go to Tony Romo,” Rapoport said. “So what would that mean? Say four games — if Dak continues to struggle, maybe over the course of a month, maybe they would think about calling in Tony Romo. But make no mistake, this is Dak Prescott’s team now and for the future.”

It’s no secret that the Cowboys have Prescott on a long leash. You don’t just bench a quarterback who led the team on an 11-game winning streak just because he threw two interceptions in a game — especially when said quarterback only had two interceptions the entire season prior to that.

Ideally, Prescott will put all of the speculation about Romo to rest with a strong performance at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Sunday night. Jerry Jones hasn’t exactly helped matters with his wishy-washy comments about the quarterback situation, but the starting job is still very much Prescott’s to lose.
