Denver Broncos’ quarterback situation still looks like a disaster

Case Keenum

The Denver Broncos’ quarterback situation has been a disaster ever since Peyton Manning retired, and that still looks to be the case in 2018.

Both Case Keenum and Paxton Lynch struggled in the team’s first preseason game of 2018. Keenum went 1-for-4 for 5 yards. One of the incompletions was due to a drop out of the backfield, but Keenum was off the mark on his two other incompletions.

Lynch was 6-of-11 for 24 yards and an interception. His interception came on a tipped ball thrown into traffic, while he missed on many other throws.

Though their first and second-string QBs did not look good, at least third-stringer Chad Kelly was productive. A 7th-round pick in 2017, Kelly went 14-of-21 for 177 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. If he continues to look good and Lynch does not turn things around, there is a chance he could become the backup QB.

The real problem is this looks like it could be the third year in a row where the Broncos fail to get playoff-quality play out of their quarterback. Whether it’s been Trevor Siemian, Brock Osweiler, or former first-round pick Lynch, Denver hasn’t been able to get more than a few good games out of the quarterback position the last few years. Keenum may have had a great season last year with Minnesota, but he still needs to prove he can consistently play at that level rather than closer to the mediocre QB he was prior to that. He gave an uninspiring performance on Saturday night.
