Cleveland Browns coach Hue Jackson spent part of Monday morning explaining his comment about how no other coach could have done what he did with the Cleveland Browns.
After Cleveland clinched an 0-16 season with a loss on Sunday to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Jackson, 1-31 over two seasons, made a rather odd remark about how only he could have endured the losing that came with the job. On Monday, he attempted to clarify, arguing that the “average person” could not endure such a futile two-year stretch.
“When I said, ‘I don’t think any other coach would do that job,’ I am not trying to sound arrogant, flippant or anything like that,” Jackson said Monday, via Mike Florio of ProFootballTalk. “I just think these situations are hard when you don’t win. When you are doing everything you can to win and it does not happen that way, I think those situations are hard. I don’t think the average person could go through that. That is what I meant by that. I think that is a tough situation to be in.”
Jackson has been assured his job is safe, so it seems he can say odd things without repercussion. Nobody is going to buy that Jackson is a martyr above the fray who deserves plaudits for maintaining his sanity through two of the worst seasons in NFL history.
