Reason for Jaire Alexander’s absence from Packers OTAs given

Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander (23) walks off the field during training camp on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022, at Ray Nitschke Field in Ashwaubenon, Wis. Samantha Madar/USA TODAY NETWORK-Wis.

Jaire Alexander did not attend the Green Bay Packers’ voluntary workout on Friday, and now we have more information regarding the matter.

There has been a belief for several months that the Packers would not bring Alexander back due to his injuries and high salary. The Packers have even had trade discussions surrounding the cornerback, though nothing has materialized yet on that front.

On Friday, reporter Josina Anderson reported that Alexander and the Packers have an understanding that he will not report until his situation with the team is resolved. Anderson further says that the Packers have had trade talks with other teams, and Green Bay is also considering releasing the cornerback.

Earlier this week, ESPN reporter Rob Demovsky said that a reconciliation between the sides was also a possibility.

According to a source, the Packers and Jaire Alexander continue to talk about a possible resolution, which could include a reconciliation to where Alexander plays for the Packers in 2025 after all.

All options are still on the table: release, trade or return.

Alexander is set to make $16.15 million in base salary and has a $24.6 million cap hit for 2025. He has two years left on the 4-year, $84 million extension he signed in 2022.

Alexander, 28, has only played in 7 games each of the last two regular seasons. He made the Pro Bowl in 2020 and 2022 — both years where he played in most of the regular season games. Translation: when he is healthy, he is a good cornerback, but he hasn’t been healthy often enough during his career.
