Jerry Jones seems to be pushing for Trey Lance to have offensive role
Cooper Rush will start for the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday with Dak Prescott injured, but Jerry Jones clearly thinks the team’s other backup quarterback should be involved in the offense, too.
During a Friday appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones said he is confident that Trey Lance can help the Cowboys while Precott is out. The 82-year-old owner insisted he was not merely pushing for Lance to get playing time, though it certainly came across that way.
“Oh there is a window for Trey Lance. There’s packages that we can work on … Let me be clear that’s not just to get Lance some playtime,” Jones said. “That’s to bring to the table some offense for us.”
The coaches might not like this, but Jerry Jones on Trey Lance to @1053thefan: “Oh there is a window for Trey Lance. There’s packages that we can work on … Let me be clear that’s not just to get Lance some playtime. That’s to bring to the table some offense for us.”

The Cowboys traded a fourth-round draft pick to the San Francisco 49ers in exchange for Lance prior to last season. Jones reportedly pulled the trigger on the trade by himself without consulting with head coach Mike McCarthy. He defended the move and praised Lance for the potential that the former No. 3 overall pick has, even though the Cowboys are committed to Prescott for years to come.
It is possible that the Cowboys are designing a package of plays for Lance while Prescott is out nursing a hamstring injury. If not, we doubt McCarthy will be pleased that the owner is saying so publicly.
