The New York Mets might be pulling the plug on the Freddy Peralta experiment after just six months.
The Mets are “likely” to trade away their star pitcher Peralta, Steve Phillips of MLB Network reported Monday in an appearance on The New York Post’s baseball podcast “The Show.” Peralta is expected to be sent elsewhere ahead of the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline.
A two-time All-Star and the NL’s wins leader with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2025, Peralta arrived in New York via a trade with Milwaukee this past January. While Peralta was expected to be the team’s ace and got the start for the Mets on Opening Day, things have not exactly gone according to plan since then.
Peralta is currently having one of the worst seasons of his big-league career. He now sits at 5-8 with a 4.88 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, and a career-low 9.0 K/9 through 20 total starts for the Mets.
New York as a team is having a rather wretched year as well. At 40-57, the Mets own the second-worst record in the National League and are already all but eliminated from postseason contention at a full 12 games back of a Wild Card spot heading into the second half of the season.
We recently learned that the Mets would be holding onto another notable All-Star on their roster through the trade deadline. But the same might not be true for Peralta, who can become a free agent after the season and is thus a prime candidate to be moved in the coming weeks.
