New information has emerged regarding the golf cart incident involving former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway and his former agent.

Jeff Sperbeck, Elway’s longtime agent, died Wednesday of injuries he sustained after falling off a golf cart driven by Elway. On Friday, Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco said a police investigation had turned up “nothing nefarious,” and that Sperbeck’s death appeared to be a tragic accident.

“We have not learned anything that would indicate that this is anything other than a tragic accident,” Bianco told Chuck Schilken of the Los Angeles Times.

Bianco added that there was no indication alcohol was a factor in the incident. While he did not confirm that Elway was driving the cart, he did say that there were no indications the driver was at fault.

Reports indicated that Elway and Sperbeck were attending the Stagecoach music festival, and visited The Madison Club in La Quinta, Calif., on Saturday. Sperbeck fell off a golf cart that Elway was driving and hit his head, causing the traumatic injuries that led to his death four days later.

Elway previously issued a statement saying he was “devastated and heartbroken” by Sperbeck’s death.

Sperbeck began working with Elway in 1990, and represented the quarterback during his football career. He had over 100 clients as an agent. He and Elway were close and even partnered on a winery in 2013 called 7Cellars.
