John Fox leaves door open for Bears to make QB change
Mike Glennon continued to struggle in a blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers Thursday night, and it seems like only a matter of time before the Chicago Bears make a change at quarterback.
Following his team’s 35-14 loss, Bears head coach John Fox said a lot of changes are coming and did not rule out sending Glennon to the bench.
“We need to make a lot of changes,” Fox said when asked about the quarterback position, via Jeff Dickerson of ESPN.com. “We will evaluate everything, and we’ve got a lot of work to do before we line up against Minnesota on [Oct. 9]. We are going to look at everything.”
Glennon completed 21-of-33 passes for 218 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. He has now thrown just four touchdowns compared to five interceptions in four games, and he’s also lost three fumbles. After an embarrassing 29-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2, Fox defended Glennon and said he will not bench him in favor of rookie first-round pick Mitchell Tribusky.
It seems the coach is starting to change his tune a bit.
“Again, Mitch is a young player, four regular-season games into his rookie season in his NFL career,” Fox said. “Like I said, we have a big gap here [in terms of Trubisky’s experience versus Glennon’s]. We will look at everything and everybody, not just the quarterback position.”
Ideally, the Bears would have liked for Trubisky to spend a full season on the bench. That was the plan when they signed Glennon to a contract that included $16 million guaranteed and then traded up to draft Trubisky. But with Fox potentially coaching for his job, he can’t ignore how poorly Glennon is playing.
