Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp is expected to sit out in Week 3 with an ankle injury, but it sounds like he could avoid a long-term absence.

Kupp suffered an ankle injury during the first half of the Los Angeles Rams’ 41-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., on Sunday. Rams head coach Sean McVay told reporters on Monday that Kupp will miss “an extended period of time” and did not rule out placing the veteran wideout on injured reserve.

The Rams did not place Kupp on IR this week, however. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported on Thursday that Kupp has a high-ankle sprain and will wear a cast for about a week.

Players who go on IR are not eligible to return for at least four weeks, so it is a positive sign that the Rams chose not to go that route with Kupp.

Kupp had 4 catches for 37 yards against the Cardinals before he was seen limping off the field. The 31-year-old had a whopping 14 receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown in the Rams’ Week 1 loss to the Detroit Lions.

Though he has an extensive injury history, Kupp remains one of the most productive wide receivers in the NFL when healthy. Pro Bowl receiver Puka Nacua has also been sidelined with an injury, so the Rams are probably hoping Kupp can return sooner than initially expected.
