Would Packers set unrealistic asking price for Aaron Rodgers?

Aaron Rodgers has yet to decide where he wants to play next season. The Green Bay Packers assured the star quarterback last offseason that they would trade him if he did not want to return in 2022, but what if no team is willing to meet their asking price?

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on Sunday that the Packers have made a “massive” contract offer to Rodgers that will have a big impact on the NFL’s quarterback market. They also have not entertained any trade offers, but they are expected to attach a huge price tag to the 38-year-old if he wants out. One of Fowler’s sources questioned if a rival team would even be willing to pay it.

“I don’t believe a team would pay what [the Packers] would want,” the source said.

The Packers are going to be in a difficult spot if Rodgers asks for a trade. Teams will know they have to move the MVP at that point, and their only leverage will be to encourage a bidding war.

There are at least three teams that have reportedly prepared trade offers for Rodgers. While Rodgers is 38, he is still playing at an elite level. It will likely take multiple first-round picks to land him. The question is how many teams are willing to sacrifice their long-term future for a chance to contend in the next few years.
