The New England Patriots have hired a new scouting assistant who is known to many as college football’s “Van Wilder.”

Former Miami Hurricanes tight end Cam McCormick is now a scouting assistant for the Patriots. He recently shared the news via a photo he posted on Instagram.

McCormick’s LinkedIn page indicates that he began his new role at some point earlier this month.

McCormick was granted nine years of college eligibility, which is believed to be more than any other Division I FBS football player in history. He began his collegiate career at Oregon in 2016 and was with the Ducks until 2023, when he transferred to Miami.

McCormick was granted extra years of eligibility due to taking a standard redshirt year, receiving two medical redshirt exemptions due to injuries and an extra year from the pandemic. He has a bachelor’s degree in journalism and communications and a master’s degree in advertising and brand responsibility.

In total, McCormick appeared in 55 college games. He caught 32 passes for 273 yards and 7 touchdowns. McCormick had 6 catches for 42 yards and 3 touchdowns with Miami last season.

Fellow Miami alum Alonzo Highsmith is a member of the Patriots’ front office, which may have helped McCormick land his new job.

If experience playing in college matters, McCormick should thrive in a scouting assistant role.
