The Tennessee Titans will reportedly make Mike Mularkey their permanent head coach.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the hiring on Saturday, with the team making it official shortly thereafter.
Mularkey served as Tennessee’s interim coach for the final nine games of the season following the firing of Ken Whisenhunt, going 2-7 in those games. He went 2-14 in one season as Jacksonville head coach in 2012, and compiled a 14-18 record in two seasons at Buffalo from 2004 to 2005.
The hiring doesn’t come as a surprise, as Mularkey has long been considered the frontrunner for the job despite his previous struggles and the team’s underwhelming finish to the season under his leadership. Clearly, the Titans’ brass saw something in him that made them give him the job. He’ll have Marcus Mariota and the number one pick in the upcoming draft, so there are pieces there to work with.
