Vernon Davis ‘strongly’ believes the 49ers should be the Super Bowl favorites

June 6, 2012 by Steve DelVecchio • Comments

After what they accomplished last season, it would be fair to argue that the 49ers are the best team in the NFC heading into 2012. You could certainly make a case for the Packers, but with the Saints having lost Sean Payton and Jonathan Vilma for the season and yet to lock up Drew Brees, the NFC could be weaker this season than it was last season. Vernon Davis seems to think there is no debating who the NFC Super Bowl favorite is.

“I strongly believe we should be the Super Bowl favorites,” Davis said during an interview with the San Jose Mercury News. “But I can’t talk about it because it’s all about work. It starts here at practice. I don’t want to talk about it and brag and say this and that, because it’s not about that. It’s about working first. And in the end, you will see where you’ll be.”

That may be so, but it’s never a good idea for a player to come out and say it. Davis didn’t exactly guarantee that the Niners would win the NFC, but there’s no need to put more of a bullseye on the team’s back than the one that already exists. His rationale is a lot more sound than that of someone like this who envisions a 5-11 team in the Super Bowl, but sometimes things are better left unsaid.  Confidence is one thing. Let the play dictate who the Super Bowl favorite is.
