John Brenkus, the host of a popular former ESPN show, has died.

Brenkus was the host and co-creator of the show “Sport Science.” The program, which premiered in 2007, was originally on Fox Sports Network before moving to ESPN.

A statement on Brenkus’ social media account says Brenkus died after a battle with depression. He was 54.

“It is with profound sadness that we share that John Brenkus has passed away.

“John, co-founder of Base Productions, founder of Brinx.TV, and co-creator and host of the 6-time Emmy Award-winning ‘Sport Science,’ had been battling depression.

“John lost his fight with this terrible illness on May 31st, 2025.

“His heartbroken family and friends request privacy at this time, and encourage anyone who is struggling with depression to seek help.”

ESPN purchased the ‘Sport Science’ brand from Brenkus in 2017. While the network only aired one full season of the show in 2010, the concept was later used for segments on “SportsCenter” and other ESPN programs. The segment examined the science behind a variety of aspects of the sports world, with Brenkus often weighing in on polarizing topics such as “Deflategate” and connecting them to science.

Brenkus had tried to revive his show independently in recent years. He was also open about his struggles with depression. During an interview with former NFL player Marcellus Wiley in 2023, Brenkus opened up about attempting suicide.
