Jason Day says that the lack of fans at the PGA Championship was a factor in the competition this weekend.
There were some limited amounts of spectators and media/staff members (and a VIP) at the PGA Championship at Harding Park in San Francisco, Calif., but a major fan presence has been missing at events since the PGA Tour resumed playing in June.
Day shot 10 under for the tournament and finished tied for fourth. He said the lack of fans was a factor.
“It definitely is (a factor). We don’t have the crowds, and that usually is a deciding factor on a lot of the wins out here. Some guys can handle it a little better than others … typically we would have an enormous crowd following the golf, and unfortunately we don’t have that this week,” Day said after his round in an interview with CBS.
Day, 32, won the PGA Championship in 2015, which is his only major win so far. He has 17 wins as a professional golfer.
23-year-old Collin Morikawa ended up winning the event for his first career major. He has been on fire since the PGA Tour resumed and now is part of some exclusive company.
Jason Day’s shoes were all the rage at Memorial on Thursday in Dublin, Ohio.
The Australian born golfer was wearing Cleveland Cavaliers-colored shoes at the tournament in advance of Game 1 of the NBA Finals. Day may have been born in Australia, but his wife, Ellie, is from Columbus and a fan of the local teams, such as the Blue Jackets and Cavs. Day has become a fan of the teams as well.
Day shared a photo of the shoes on Instagram Wednesday, also tagging Cavs player JR Smith, who enjoys golfing:

Day’s association with the Cavs was already pretty well known, but now that’s grown even more. Most remember when two seasons ago, his wife was sent to the hospital after LeBron James collided with her. This is a much better tie to the team.
Jason Day let it slip out on Wednesday that Rickie Fowler has a girlfriend, essentially confirming the speculation that began over the weekend.
Fowler and Allison Stokke, a pole vaulter who became a viral sensation (against her wishes) in the early days of sports blogs, both shared photos on Instagram over the weekend where they looked to be a couple (photos here). That led to great immediate speculation that the two were dating.
Day was speaking Wednesday at the Zubich Classic and dropped the news.
Nike recently made the somewhat surprising announcement that it will no longer be manufacturing golf clubs and equipment, but that does not mean the apparel juggernaut is bowing out when it comes to shoes and clothing.
Like many other players who play Taylormade clubs, Day had previously worn all Adidas apparel. However, Adidas recently decided to sell parts of its golf division — including Taylormade — and will no longer be directly linked to the club manufacturer.
By being aggressive with apparel partnerships, Nike could end up making more money in the golf industry now than it did when it was making clubs. Nike clubs were not wildly popular on the PGA Tour, and players can now sign deals strictly with Nike apparel and still choose whichever equipment they want to play.
The Zika virus is transmitted through mosquitoes and can cause serious birth defects and other complications. Fellow PGA golfer Rory McIlroy has made the same decision as Day, and more are sure to follow. One NBA player says he is considering freezing a sperm sample before he travels to Rio if he decides to represent his country in the Olympics.
Golf is returning to the Olympics this summer for the first time since 1904.
Ellie Day, wife of pro golfer Jason Day and victim of a LeBron James mack truck collision Thursday night, tweeted out a note Friday afternoon about the incident.
If you’re unfamiliar, Jason and Ellie Day were seated courtside Thursday night when James barreled into her while chasing a loose ball. Ellie Day had to be stretchered off and spent the night in the hospital, but was released on Friday morning and all seems to be well.
Ellie Day tweeted an extensive statement on Friday afternoon addressing several points. She compared the impact to a “minor car accident” and that her entire body felt like it was hit by a truck. Day also hit out at those who felt she didn’t do enough to get out of the way, or that Jason should have tried to do something.
“It was a blur,” Day wrote. “To the crazies that think Jason should have protected me — if he had time to react, so would have I. Also, I would not have liked both dudes landing on me. Lebron is huge and had such momentum he could not have stopped!!”
She also ripped those who accused it of being some sort of money grab or publicity stunt, saying she understands the risks of sitting courtside and saying the players are just “huge men doing their job.” She also thanked everyone for the support and expressed thankfulness that she wasn’t still pregnant and didn’t have her children with her.
All in all, it sounds as though Day is doing fine and is taking the whole ordeal well, and that’s great to hear.
Day left Quicken Loans Arena on a stretcher Thursday night after LeBron barreled into her while trying to save a loose ball from going out of bounds. If you haven’t seen the video, you can watch it here.
Day was transported to a local hospital and apparently stayed overnight, though it’s a positive sign that she was released early the next morning. LeBron obviously felt badly about what happened and sat nearby Day as she was being taken out of the arena. He also wished her well in a tweet after the game.
Ellie Day I hope you're doing okay! My apologies! Hope u guys come back to another game soon. Love LJ!
The Days live in Columbus, Ohio, and regularly attend Cavs home games. Ellie is popular with fans because she does things like awesome ticket giveaways. Here’s hoping the frightening incident doesn’t discourage her from going to future games.
Jordan Spieth has emerged as arguably the most popular golfer in the world this year with his two major victories and dominating performances over the last five-plus months. So when Jason Day was paired with Spieth for the final round of the PGA Championship on Sunday, he knew plenty of fans would be rooting against him.
What Day may not have expected, however, is how animated some of those fans would be.
After the 27-year-old captured the first major win of his career, he revealed that fans were yelling “choke!” at him down the stretch.
“(Spieth) was a heavy favorite. I could hear the fans… some people were out there going ‘choke, choke, choke’ to me. Some people weren’t very friendly,” Day said, per Phil Lutton of The Sydney Morning Herald. “That’s something that builds character, that builds mental toughness. To play alongside him (Spieth) and for him to tell me ‘there’s nothing I could do today’, I played good golf.”
Day finished the PGA Championship at 20-under, which is the lowest 72-hole score ever recorded in a major tournament. Prior to winning at Whistling Straits, he had knocked on the door several times with two top-three finishes at the Masters, a pair of runner-up finishes at the U.S. Open and a fourth-place finish at the British Open last month. Day has also dealt with some scary bouts of vertigo, including one that caused him to collapse to the ground during the U.S. Open this year.
We know fans can be pretty cold when rooting for their favorite players, but many of them probably didn’t know Day’s story. He lost his father to cancer at age 12. Day’s mother made infinite sacrifices to send him to boarding school and make sure he got the golf instruction he needed.
Jason Day’s most vocal supporter week in and week out is his wife Ellie. On Sunday, Mrs. Day did her best to make sure her husband had a few more fans in his corner during the final round of play at the PGA Championship.
With Jason leading the field heading into Sunday, Ellie took to Twitter to give away four free tickets to watch the drama unfold at Whistling Straits. They disappeared quickly, as expected.
Hey people… Anybody need tickets for today? I have four to give away!
