Mavericks get brutal injury news on Anthony Davis
The Dallas Mavericks got just about the worst news possible on Anthony Davis after he suffered a serious hand injury on Thursday.
Davis sustained ligament damage in his left hand, according to Shams Charania and Tim MacMahon of ESPN. He is seeking a second opinion, but there is a chance he could be out several months if surgery is required.

— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) January 9, 2026
This news makes it possible, if not likely, that Davis is out past the Feb. 5 trade deadline. That would deprive the Mavericks of a valuable trade piece, especially since the team has so few long-term draft assets thanks to some ill-advised moves in the past.
After 2026, the Mavericks do not own their own first-round pick again until 2031. One could argue that it would be within their interests to keep losing this year, and losing Davis for an extended period of time would probably help them do that. However, the optimal outcome would have been for the Mavericks to get some value in a trade, as Davis was expected to be a fairly coveted piece.
Even before the Mavericks traded for him, the big knock on Davis was how injury-prone he is. He has been plagued by so many injuries since Dallas acquired him that he is the subject of one of the most incredible and unfortunate streaks in the NBA. That will unfortunately continue with his latest injury, and raises questions about how the Mavericks will approach the rest of the season.
Davis has only appeared in 20 games this season for the Mavericks. He averaged 20.4 points and 11.1 rebounds per game this season before this latest setback.
Former 30 HR hitter tests positive for PEDs
A former 30-homer hitter has been suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs.
Outfielder Max Kepler, who is currently a free agent, was suspended after testing positive for Epitrenbolone, an anabolic steroid intended to increase muscle and appetite.

— Jayson Stark (@jaysonst) January 9, 2026
Kepler once appeared to be a young slugger worth watching with the Minnesota Twins. He hit 36 home runs in 2019, but never came particularly close to that total again. His best year since was a 24-homer campaign in 2023.
The Philadelphia Phillies brought Kepler in as a free agent last season, but he struggled mightily, hitting just .216 with 18 home runs in 127 games. He had yet to find a landing spot in free agency coming off that poor campaign, and his hopes of doing so are definitely finished now.
Kepler has 179 career home runs, most of them coming with the Twins. The 32-year-old faces a long road back to baseball if he wants to try and continue his MLB career after this.
Ja Morant linked to 1 new team amid latest trade report
Ja Morant may be getting an opportunity to go Hollywood.
The major development broke on Friday that the Memphis Grizzlies are open to trading their multi-time All-Star Morant for the first time. With Memphis struggling this season at 16-21, it appears that a Morant trade is very much on the table ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline.
In the wake of the news, Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints reported that a new team is worth keeping an eye on in the Morant sweepstakes — the LA Clippers. Siegel does note though that the Clippers currently lack the draft capital and young talent that Memphis would prioritize in any potential Morant trade.
The Clippers are having a tough year at 13-23 but could make a run at the play-in tournament after going 7-2 over their last nine games. With the Oklahoma City Thunder owning their unprotected first-round draft pick in 2026, the Clippers have all the reason in the world to try to go for broke this season.
While Siegel is correct that the Clippers are light on quality assets, they could foreseeably trade center Ivica Zubac, 28, for draft-pick compensation (with two big teams recently having been mentioned in connection to Zubac). The Clippers could then use that compensation to entice Memphis along with one of their younger players who have actually been getting some good developmental minutes this season like Kobe Sanders, 23, or Yanic Konan Niederhauser, 22.
As for the Grizzlies, they already launched a soft reset by trading away guard Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic over the offseason. As Memphis continues to flounder, the troubled and oft-injured Morant could the next one to go (with multiple other interesting suitors beyond just the Clippers already having emerged).
Jaxson Dart may have dropped a big hint about the Giants’ next head coach
The New York Giants have one of the most coveted head coaching vacancies in the NFL this offseason, which has led to them getting linked to some big names. Quarterback Jaxson Dart may know a bit more than most of us about who that next coach may be.
Dart was spotted on the sidelines prior to Ole Miss’ College Football Playoff game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Az. on Thursday night. Cameras caught him having a discussion with someone on the Rebels’ sideline late in the second half, and some lipreaders believe he dropped two names as possibilities for the Giants job.
“I don’t know. Harbaugh or Stefanski, but I don’t know,” Dart seemingly said.
Not a lip reader but…

Jaxson Dart: "I don't know.. Harbaugh or Stefanski.. but I don't know." https://t.co/j0bpd1yunc pic.twitter.com/Fagzkvpic0
Assuming that even is what Dart was saying, we do not know if he was asked who he wants the coach to be or who he thinks the coach will be. Either way, he is not exactly going too far out on a limb. John Harbaugh is thought to be New York’s top target, and they had also been heavily linked to Kevin Stefanski before Harbaugh became available. It would not be at all surprising to see the Giants hire either one of them.
Dart is a big part of the Giants’ draw. He flashed great potential as a rookie by throwing for 2,272 yards with 15 touchdowns and 5 interceptions while rushing for 487 yards with 9 scores. The Giants probably aren’t leaning too heavily on him during their hiring process, but it would not be a shock if he were being kept in the loop.
Major update emerges about Ketel Marte’s future
The longest-tenured Arizona Diamondbacks player will be getting to add another season to that tally.
Arizona has pulled star infielder Ketel Marte off the trade market, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported on Friday. Marte is set to remain with Arizona as their starting second baseman into the 2026 MLB season.
The 32-year-old Marte, a three-time All-Star, was a very hot trade candidate this offseason. He hit .283 with 28 home runs and 72 RBIs last season through 126 games. The year before that, Marte was even better, batting .292 with 36 home runs and 95 RBIs through 136 games.
Marte, the switch hitter, is also still signed on a long-term contract. He has five years and $102.5 million remaining on his deal with the Dbacks (with an $11.5 million player option for 2031 as well).
Last season though, Marte caused some headaches. After he took an unpaid leave of absence from the team in July after his home was burglarized, a report emerged claiming that Dbacks teammates were unhappy with Marte. Then a couple of weeks ago, Marte himself issued an apparent response to that report.
Arizona, a World Series team in 2023, finished below .500 last season (80-82) and sold off many of their top assets at the trade deadline (including Eugenio Suarez, Josh Naylor, and Merrill Kelly). But despite interest from some big-name teams, the Dbacks have decided to hold onto Marte, who has been with them since the 2017 season.
NFL fans all had the same reaction to the Al Michaels news
Al Michaels has made a decision on his broadcasting future, and it is not one that most NFL fans are thrilled about.
Amazon Prime confirmed that Michaels will return for “Thursday Night Football” in 2026 as the play-by-play voice. The 81-year-old said he still feels great and capable of doing a good job.
“First of all, I feel great,” Michaels told Richard Deitsch of Sports Business Journal. “Everyone at Amazon has been fantastic and I love working with this group. I’ve been looking at this year one year at a time and as long as I feel I’m at the top of my game, I’d like to continue.”
Fans, however, were not as enthusiastic about the news. Many feel Michaels has lost a step and had hoped he would step aside and retire. Others criticized Amazon for not taking the decision out of his hands.
Love Al Michaels. Legend. But watching him call games lately feels like he’s well behind everything happening on the field. If he wants to keep doing it, fine. Prime’s audience is huge though. Broadcast matters. Someone needed to step in. This can’t keep being the standard. https://t.co/zRviS5bd9M
— Rob Pizzola (@robpizzola) January 9, 2026
Al Michaels has had an incredible career as a broadcaster and this is absolutely the wrong move. Those statements aren’t mutually exclusive. Every TNF game — and I mean EVERY single one — is followed by exasperation from fans regarding Michaels’ performance. This is just sad. https://t.co/fZcw1xYIxm
— Keith Leonard (@Keith_Leonard) January 9, 2026
Al Michaels an absolute legend but its beyond the time.
— Ryan (@datboywolf) January 9, 2026
Al Michaels is one of the all-time greats, but it has been time for a few years now. He comes off as disinterested in the game he's doing at least 75% of the time. He's 82. Someone else should be in that chair.
— Chris Mueller (@ChrisMuellerPGH) January 9, 2026
None of these reactions are new. Michaels’ performances have been a regular source of complaints on social media all year long. The perceived issues have only been magnified as the NFL has given Amazon more prominent games, including Saturday’s Wild Card playoff game between the Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.
Michaels is a legend, and there are those who will say that he has earned the right to decide when to end his career. Plenty of others disagree, though, and aren’t looking forward to his 41st season of NFL broadcasting.
Michael Irvin went nuts after Miami’s CFP win
Few people were more hyped than Michael Irvin was after the Miami Hurricanes overcame the Ole Miss Rebels to reach the national championship on Thursday night.
Irvin, a Miami alum, has enthusiastically followed the program throughout the College Football Playoff, and Thursday’s Fiesta Bowl was no different. After Miami’s 31-27 victory, he celebrated by posting a video from State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Az. in which he repeatedly smacks some Ole Miss apparel with a belt. Irvin said he “had to do another BTA,” a reference to the phrase “belt to a–.”
HAD TO DO ANOTHER BTA pic.twitter.com/a2aqao438A
— Michael Irvin (@michaelirvin88) January 9, 2026
To say that Irvin was fired up would probably be an understatement. He has made this gesture something of a tradition, having done the same to Ohio State after the Hurricanes knocked them off in the quarterfinal.
Irvin has lived and died with every game so far. For a period, it looked like Miami was on the ropes, and their dramatic comeback probably had him going even crazier than usual.
Irvin played three seasons for Miami and won a national title with the Hurricanes in 1988. He will now be hoping the current team can match that feat.
Trinidad Chambliss’ attorney sends fiery response to NCAA
The NCAA denied Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’ request for an eligibility waiver on Friday, but his camp certainly does not appear finished trying to get him a sixth year of NCAA eligibility.
Chambliss had sought a medical redshirt for his sophomore season at Ferris State, arguing that he was suffering from a respiratory illness at the time. The NCAA denied the request largely because no contemporaneous evidence had been provided to suggest that had been the case at the time.
Tom Mars, Chambliss’ legal counsel, strongly implied that he would be taking the NCAA to court over the decision.
“There’s now an opportunity to move this case to a level playing field where Trinidad’s rights will be determined by the Mississippi judiciary instead of some bureaucrats in Indianapolis who couldn’t care less about the law or doing the write thing,” Mars said in a statement. “Whether to pursue that course of action is a decision only Trinidad and his parents can make.”
Statement from Tom Mars. Legal action appears imminent. https://t.co/kS2hdxvrfT pic.twitter.com/UDMtZf4gFw
— Ross Dellenger (@RossDellenger) January 9, 2026
For now, the NCAA’s decision means Chambliss has played the last college game of his career. If he can get it overturned in court, he has a chance to return to Ole Miss for the 2026 season.
Chambliss was a breakout star in 2025, throwing for 3,937 yards with 22 touchdowns to go along with eight rushing scores. Ole Miss was very aggressive in trying to land him, and have been just as determined to keep him for one more year. At this point, though, that outcome appears to be out of their hands.
Grizzlies are open to trading Ja Morant
The Memphis Grizzlies are at least open to a potential Ja Morant trade for the first time.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Friday that the Grizzlies are entertaining potential trade offers for Morant and may move him prior to the Feb. 5 trade deadline. The expectation is that the team would want young players or draft picks in any trade.
Multiple teams are pursuing Morant in trade talks and rival executives believe the Grizzlies would prioritize draft picks and young players in return, sources said. Morant, 26, is under contract with the Grizzlies through the 2027-28 season. https://t.co/lkVijnLeIR
— Shams Charania (@ShamsCharania) January 9, 2026
Morant has increasingly been the subject of trade rumors this season, but as recently as November, it was reported that Memphis still saw him as an integral part of the team’s future. However, the Grizzlies are just 16-21, and Morant is averaging just 19 points per game. That would be the lowest number of his career since his rookie campaign.
Morant signed a five-year, $197.2 million designated rookie max extension before the 2022-23 campaign and is now in the third year of that deal. That means he is under contract through the 2027-28 season.
At this point, it is fair to question how much Morant would fetch in a trade. While undoubtedly talented, his off-court behavior may have alienated some teams, and the Grizzlies simply have not won consistently with him as their centerpiece.
Based on some claims, however, Morant might welcome a trade away from Memphis.
Trae Young had brutally honest farewell message for Hawks
Trae Young did not hold back in his very honest farewell message for Atlanta Hawks fans.
Young’s trade to the Washington Wizards was made official on Friday, and the star guard shared a farewell message for Hawks fans on social media. He wrote that the last few years “weren’t how I wanted them to be,” and that “the injuries, the setbacks, and situations that didn’t make sense” prevented the organization from reaching its full potential during his time there.
Perhaps most notably, Young essentially admitted that he had grown stagnant with the Hawks, and that he was eager to leave.
“The pain of staying the same eventually outweighed the uncertainty of change,” Young wrote.
…Another Opportunity🙏🏽💯❄️ pic.twitter.com/jDk09ZI8BZ
— Trae Young (@TheTraeYoung) January 9, 2026
It may be that Young is trying to make it seem like he had a bigger say in the trade process than he actually did. After all, a few days ago, he was presenting himself as “open-minded” about a potential trade, and was gone from Atlanta within 72 hours of that.
Whatever the case, Young’s time in Atlanta feels like a lot of unmet potential. He averaged 25.2 points per game there over his career, but only made one lengthy playoff run and spent more time missing the postseason than playing in it. He appears content that his tenure with the team is coming to an end, even though his future may not be much clearer with the Wizards.
Lane Kiffin reacts to Ole Miss losing in CFP semifinals
Lane Kiffin shared his reaction via social media on Thursday to the Ole Miss Rebels losing to the Miami Hurricanes 31-27 in their College Football Playoff semifinal game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz.
Kiffin shared a GIF of a cartoon heart breaking and added a blue heart to his post, representing the Ole Miss colors.
“Amazing effort and grit. @OleMissFB
“best season ever in the history of Ole Miss!!
“love guys,” Kiffin wrote on X.

This was Ole Miss’ first time playing in the CFP, and it was the culmination of six hard years of work from Kiffin during his time in Oxford, Miss. And guess what? Kiffin thought so little of the team he built that he left them ahead of the playoffs, feeling that LSU would give him a better chance of winning national championships.
Maybe Kiffin is right that LSU will be a better spot for winning championships. But it still doesn’t change that the person who should have believed in his team the most is the one who believed in them the least. His heart may be broken for his former team, but fans think he may feel otherwise.
Fans said the same thing after Ole Miss lost to Miami
Ole Miss lost to Miami 31-27 in their College Football Playoff semifinal game at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., on Thursday night, and their defeat had fans all saying the same thing.
The Rebels and Hurricanes were neck-and-neck for most of the game, with no team ever trailing by more than one score. The fourth quarter was especially thrilling, with the lead changing four times during the quarter. The Hurricanes prevailed thanks to a touchdown by Carson Beck with 18 seconds left.
The outcome of the game changing in the final seconds — and going in favor of Miami — had fans all commenting about how relieved Lane Kiffin must have been.

Nothing would have made Lane Kiffin look worse than seeing Ole Miss advance to the national championship game right after he deserted the program because he felt LSU offered a better chance to win a title. He can try to pretend all he wants that wanted Ole Miss to keep winning and get to the championship game, but most people recognize he feels relief that the team lost. How could he not?
Everyone said the same thing about Trinidad Chambliss after Ole Miss’ loss to Miami
Trinidad Chambliss did not get Ole Miss past Miami on Thursday in the College Football Playoff. But he did convert thousands of fans into believers in his talent.
The Ole Miss quarterback did all he could to get the Rebels over the hump against the Hurricanes at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Chambliss made huge plays down the stretch, including a go-ahead touchdown pass to Dae’Quan Wright that gave Ole Miss a 27-24 lead with just over three minutes remaining.

Miami QB Carson Beck answered with a rushing touchdown of his own with 18 seconds left to put the Hurricanes back on top. Chambliss made two quick strikes to get Ole Miss into Miami territory, but ran out of time to make a game-winning play.
Chambliss did win over several armchair scouts. Many fans expressed that Chambliss, who is lobbying to be eligible for one more season at Ole Miss, was talented enough to be a top pick in the upcoming NFL draft.

The Ole Miss star finished Thursday’s contest with 277 yards and a touchdown on a 24/37 passing clip.
Chambliss announced Monday that he was returning to Ole Miss, so long as the NCAA approves his appeal for a medical redshirt waiver, which would give him one final year of eligibility. Fans seem to believe, however, that losing his eligibility wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world.
Chambliss went from playing Division II football to having the attention of NFL scouts looking for a franchise savior at QB.
Eli Manning becomes a meme during Ole Miss-Miami CFP game
Eli Manning was really going through it during Thursday night’s CFP game.
The retired former Pro Bowl quarterback Manning was in attendance for Thursday’s CFP semifinal between Ole Miss and Miami at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Manning, who played his college ball at Ole Miss from 2000-03, also served as an honorary captain for the game.
Multiple times throughout the contest, the ESPN broadcast cut to Manning in the luxury box looking extremely stressed at the up-and-down roller coaster of a game. Take a look.

Unfortunately for Manning, he walked away disappointed after Thursday’s game. Ole Miss lost to Miami by a final score of 31-27 after Hurricanes quarterback Carson Beck scored one of the latest touchdowns in CFP history to give his team the lead.
The two-time Super Bowl MVP Manning has been a great ambassador for his alma mater and even had a great post to social media about the Lane Kiffin saga last month. But he wasn’t enough to carry Ole Miss to victory in the CFP semifinal as it will instead be Miami who gets to play the winner of Indiana and Oregon for a shot at the national championship later this month.
Carson Beck runs in game-winning touchdown to beat Ole Miss
Carson Beck made the decisive play underneath the bright lights of the Fiesta Bowl on Thursday to get Miami to the College Football Playoff title game.
The Hurricanes trailed the Ole Miss Rebels 27-24 with 24 seconds left in the do-or-die contest at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz. Beck showed his veteran poise with 2nd-and-goal from the three-yard line.
Beck scanned every option and realized the best one was to take it in himself, scrambling for a go-ahead touchdown to give Miami a 31-27 lead.

Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss made things interesting with a couple of quick throws to get to Miami territory with seconds remaining. But his final pass sailed past the scrum of players waiting in the end zone, giving the Hurricanes a 31-27 victory.
The rushing touchdown was Beck’s first on the ground since Miami’s third game of the season against South Florida. That’s what you call saving your legs for exactly the right moment. Beck’s touchdown with 18 seconds left was also the second-latest go-ahead touchdown in CFP history.

Video shows the moment Kawhi Leonard hurt his ankle stepping on a fan
Kawhi Leonard appears to have discovered yet another way to get hurt.
The LA Clippers star forward Leonard is being listed as questionable for Friday’s game against the Brooklyn Nets due to a right ankle sprain. Leonard hurt his ankle during Wednesday’s loss to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden in New York, N.Y.
Law Murray of The Athletic shared video of the moment that Leonard suffered the injury. In the third quarter against the Knicks, Leonard stepped back and hit a baseline jumper over New York’s Mitchell Robinson. But his momentum carried him into the front row of seats, and Leonard ended up stepping on the foot of a courtside fan.
Here is the video.
Here's where Leonard injured his ankle. Made 10/16 FGs for 25 points through 3 quarters. Subbed out after this bucket

The six-time All-Star Leonard, now 34, has been absolutely magnificent over the last couple of weeks for the Clippers. In his last nine games, Leonard is averaging a robust 33.9 points to go along with 7.7 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 2.6 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game on 50/38/94 shooting splits as the Clippers have gone 7-2 over that stretch. That included one particularly absurd performance against the Detroit Pistons.
But the oft-injured Leonard already missed 10 straight games in November due to a sprain of that exact same ankle. Given Leonard’s notorious history, it might be fair to expect him to miss a few more games due to this latest (and unusual) ailment.
Big update surfaces about Kyrie Irving’s status
Kyrie Irving may be taking the 2025-26 season as a full-on gap year.
The injured Dallas Mavericks star Irving will not be playing before the NBA trade deadline, Tim MacMahon of ESPN reported this week on the “Howdy Partners” podcast. MacMahon also cast doubt on the potential of Irving playing at all this season.
“Kyrie is not coming back before the trade deadline,” MacMahon said, per ClutchPoints.
“I don’t know at this point if Kyrie is playing this season,” added MacMahon. “I know he wants to. We’ll see if that’s in his best interest. We’ll see if it’s in the franchise’s best interest. Those are things that need to be sorted out.”
The nine-time All-Star Irving tore the ACL in his left knee during a game in early March 2025 (see the video here) and has been sidelined ever since. ACL tears generally tend to be 9-to-12-month injuries, so Irving is just about nearing completion of that timeline.
Of course, complicating matters is Irving’s age (he will be turning 34 in a couple of months) as well as the Mavericks’ poor record this season. Dallas is at just 14-24 on the year, which has them outside of the play-in tournament zone in an extremely difficult Western Conference.
A few months ago, we heard a much more optimistic report about Irving’s recovery. But with Dallas continuing to struggle and Irving now under contract with the Mavericks through 2028 (pursuant to a recent extension), it might not make much sense for him to return to the court this year.
Tarik Skubal makes unprecedented demand in arbitration
Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal is looking to set the new standard in MLB salary arbitration.
The Tigers were unable to reach an agreement with the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner before Thursday night’s deadline, leaving arbitration to resolve how much Detroit will have to pay Skubal next season.
The process involves both the Tigers and Skubal submitting a dollar figure they believe to be a fair amount for the player’s services. Several reporters confirmed Thursday that the team submitted $19 million as their figure, while Skubal requested for a whopping $32 million.
Two-time AL Cy Young winner Tarik Skubal filed for a $32 million salary this year while the Detroit Tigers countered at $19 million, sources tell ESPN. The $13 million spread is by far the largest in salary-arbitration history and sets up for a fascinating hearing in February.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) January 9, 2026
The $13 million gap is the widest in arbitration history. If Skubal wins, his $32 million figure would also be the largest awarded to a player ever, besting the $31 million mark set by Juan Soto. Skubal’s total would also be over 50% more than David Price’s $19.5 million arbitration record for a pitcher.
While Skubal’s demand is unprecedented, most would have a tough time arguing he isn’t worth the price. The Tigers star is the back-to-back Cy Young winner with a WAR over 6.0 in each of his last two seasons. He’s the consensus best pitcher in the American League, but the $32 million figure would only make him the 6th-highest paid starter in the majors.
Details emerge on Yankees’ latest offer to Cody Bellinger
Cody Bellinger and the New York Yankees are still in a staring contest, and there may be at least one key sticking point in negotiations.
The Yankees’ most recent offer to Bellinger’s camp is a multi-year contract featuring an average annual value of over $30 million per year, Brendan Kuty of The Athletic reported on Thursday. However, Bellinger’s camp is continuing to push for a seven-year contract, Kuty adds.
Bellinger, the former NL MVP, is represented by agent Scott Boras. He will turn 31 years old in the summer, meaning that a seven-year contract would take Bellinger into his late 30s.
There is a fair argument for Bellinger to be worth that kind of commitment. He hit .272 last season with 29 home runs and 98 RBIs while also providing strong defense in the outfield.
But when you look at other player comps from this offseason, Bellinger’s stance makes a little bit less sense. Both Pete Alonso and Kyle Schwarber, two other elite power hitters, were only able to land five-year contracts (both at around the $30 million AAV figure).
The Yankees would obviously like to retain Bellinger after their successful partnership in 2025 but likely not on a seven-year contract commitment. If the two sides ultimately cannot make things work, the Yankees will have some outfield options elsewhere while the lefty hitter Bellinger himself may also have a few elite suitors to choose from.
Report: Wizards could pull an unusual move with Trae Young
Washington Wizards fans might stunningly have to wait another nine months to see Trae Young actually suit up for their team.
The Wizards made the blockbuster move on Wednesday night to acquire the four-time All-Star point guard Young from the Atlanta Hawks. The move ended Young’s tenure in Atlanta after seven-and-a-half seasons.
On Thursday, Wizards writer Josh Robbins of The Athletic made a surprising revelation about Young and the Wizards. Robbins says that he would be “surprised” if Young plays much for the Wizards this season, if at all.
Young, 27, is currently sidelined with a quad injury. The former All-NBA selection is obviously a tremendous floor-raiser. But that might not benefit the Wizards much at this point since they are a brutal 10-26 on the year (14th in the Eastern Conference). With at least four elite talents projected to be at the top of the 2026 NBA Draft (Darryn Peterson, AJ Dybantsa, Cameron Boozer, and Caleb Wilson), the incentive is incredibly strong for Washington to simply pull the plug on the 2025-26 season.
While rare, there is some precedent for former All-Stars never playing in a game for their new team during the season in which they were acquired. For one, the Toronto Raptors acquired Brandon Ingram from the New Orleans Pelicans at last season’s NBA trade deadline, and he did not play in a single game for Toronto that year. As a result, the Raptors went 30-52 but were able to land a top-10 pick in the ensuing draft (selecting Collin Murray-Boyles). With Ingram, Toronto now sits at 23-15 this season, which is fourth in the Eastern Conference.
Young is signed for $46 million this season and holds a $49 million player option for next season. While that means Young could hypothetically leave Washington this summer, the Wizards probably feel strongly about their chances of an extension considering Young’s strong feelings for them as well.
