Geno Smith booed during preseason game before taking snap

Geno-Smith

You know how we know New York Jets fans have officially turned on Geno Smith? Because they’re booing the guy before he even has a chance to do anything wrong.

During Saturday’s preseason game against the New York Giants, Jets fans showered Smith in boos before he took a snap. As Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News notes, Smith came into the game with 2:28 left in the first half — standard procedure for a second-string quarterback in an exhibition game. Jets fans immediately let him hear it.

Why? Because they’re done with Smith, obviously. The former West Virginia star hardly did anything in the game, completing 3-of-5 passes for 14 yards. But it didn’t matter, because Jets fans don’t even want to consider the possibility that Smith could be their guy in the event of a Ryan Fitzpatrick injury.

We really shouldn’t be surprised. If you remember, Jets fans booed Smith and cheered for Fitzpatrick at an even more inappropriate time earlier in the offseason. Smith can do no right in the eyes of the fanbase. In the event that Fitzpatrick goes down and Smith is the next man up, the younger quarterback will need to show some incredibly thick skin.
