Jack Del Rio believes every NFL play should be reviewable

Jack Del Rio

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio has joined a growing chorus of NFL coaches who believe that every play should be reviewable.

At the NFL Combine on Wednesday, Del Rio voiced his opinion that coaches should be able to challenge any play if they believe it to be wrong.

“You know, Bill Belichick brought up a great point in our owners meetings last year about allowing a coach to challenge any play if he decided it was worthy enough. So I’m in favor of that,” Del Rio said, via Ryan Wilson of Eye on Football. “If we have an opportunity to get something right, let’s use that opportunity and let’s get it right.

“If it’s wrong, and we all know it’s wrong, and we have an opportunity to make right under the same criteria — indisputable — then why not? So makes all the sense in the world to me and I’m supportive of something along those lines and we’ll see where it goes.”

Belichick had the original idea. Cardinals coach Bruce Arians is on board, and Panthers coach Ron Rivera has also flirted with embracing the idea.

Naturally, there is some concern that such a proposal would lengthen games. That said, when you look at some of the very questionable officiating that could not be reviewed, shouldn’t the emphasis be on getting it right in the end? Of course, one former head coach believes that there shouldn’t be any video review in the first place, so it may not be as obvious as it seems.
