Report: Vernon Davis, Joe Staley had ‘heated’ exchange over Colin Kaepernick
The San Francisco 49ers called a team meeting earlier this year after a 17-3 loss to the Green Bay Packers at home, and it sounds like the play of Colin Kaepernick was the most polarizing topic that was discussed.
According to Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com, tight end Vernon Davis called out Kaepernick after head coach Jim Tomsula left the room to allow the players to work out their differences. Offensive lineman Joe Staley reportedly came to Kaepernick’s defense, which resulted in Staley and Davis having a “heated” argument that “may have even gotten physical.”
Davis, Staley and Kaepernick supposedly smoothed things over in the days that followed, and Kaepernick later told reporters everything is fine between him and Davis.
“I have a great relationship with Vernon,” he said. “We’ve constantly had talks since I started playing. It’s something we both want to do. We both want to win. That’s where some of the frustrations come from. We’re trying to fix the losing streak we’d been on.”
Tomsula has compared the meeting to an enthusiastic Italian family dinner where everyone yells at each other and then hugs it out afterword.
But is everything really fine with the 2-5 Niners? Over the weekend, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported that Kaepernick’s confidence is completely shot and he is not receiving any support from teammates. The 27-year-old wasn’t exactly endorsed by one of the most influential 49ers players in team history this week, either.
No one really expected San Francisco to be good this year, but they could end up worse than expected if the locker room implodes.
