One of the best non-Tarik Skubal arms on the MLB trade market is officially off the board.
The Miami Marlins intend to keep their ace righty Sandy Alcantara through the Aug. 3 trade deadline, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reported on Friday. Rosenthal further adds that the Marlins, barring a total collapse over the next few weeks, actually intend to add strategically to their roster ahead of the deadline.
Alcantara, 30, is a two-time MLB All-Star and also won the NL Cy Young Award with the Marlins in 2022. After undergoing Tommy John surgery in late 2023 and missing the entire 2024 season, Alcantara is rounding into form again this year with a 10-4 record, a 4.00 ERA, and 92 strikeouts through an MLB-leading 123.2 innings pitched thus far.
When it comes to the Marlins, they were hovering under .500 just last month but have gotten hot since then. Now Miami sits at 52-42, occupying the third Wild Card spot in the NL and winning 12 of their last 15 games (including six in a row and counting).
There is also not a whole lot of urgency to trade Alcantara right now. The Dominican Republic native is still under contract for 2027 with the Marlins holding a $21 million club option on him (with a buyout of $2 million).
Alcantara produced a memorable moment earlier this season after one of the best outings of his big-league career. Though there are still three weeks left to go before the trade deadline, it appears that those will be continuing for Alcantara in Miami for the foreseeable future.
