Wondering what David Eckstein is up to these days? America’s favorite symbol for an athlete overachieving, and FJM’s favorite symbol for the media glorifying an athlete, is now narrating children’s books (in App form!).
The OC Register explains that Eckstein, whose wife does professional voice work, narrated the new children’s interactive book app “David & Goliath: The MVP Edition.”
That’s perfect, right? Because when you think of David defeating Goliath, you think of a skinny, scrappy, 5-foot-8 ballplayer who actually had much more natural talent than most people recognize.
Forgive Eckstein, though, because he’s falling into the whole David and Goliath story line trap.
“The story of David and Goliath holds special meaning to both of us, and we hope that through our involvement others will be inspired to face life’s challenges, or Goliaths, with perseverance and determination despite the odds,” he said in a press release.
I like David Eckstein, and think it’s cool that he’s narrating books now, but let’s be real: the guy was not some helpless geek who ended up in the majors strictly because of hard work. The guy has a ton of natural talent — more than most people on the planet. One doesn’t end up smacking 35 career home runs at the major league level without having an exceptional ability to hit. But carry on, continue calling him the little infielder that could, if you must.
