The San Francisco Giants have landed on a new manager before the World Series has even begun.

Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reported Tuesday that the Giants are poised to announce the hire of Bob Melvin as their new skipper. Baggarly notes that the interview process with Melvin was “swift” as San Francisco has moved quickly to make the hire after leading team officials met with Melvin on Tuesday.

The 61-year-old Melvin, a three-time Manager of the Year, is set to take over less than a month after predecessor Gabe Kapler, who managed the Giants for the last four seasons, was fired. Melvin had gone 171-153 (.528) after taking over as San Diego’s manager in 2022, but the Padres and GM AJ Preller, who appeared to have some tension with Melvin, were ready to move on.

San Francisco, who went 79-83 themselves this year and missed out on the playoffs, considered other interesting (and even potentially groundbreaking) candidates. Instead though, they will turn to the Bay Area native Melvin to run the show, thus freeing the Padres from having to pay the one year and $4 million left on Melvin’s current contract.
