Things have gone from bad to worse for the Arizona Diamondbacks and and their infamous free agent bust.
Diamondbacks pitcher Jordan Montgomery announced Tuesday that he will undergo Tommy John surgery. The procedure will end his 2025 season and potentially keep him out into 2026.

This almost certainly means Montgomery has thrown his last pitch as a Diamondback. After a great stretch run and a World Series with the Texas Rangers in 2023, his free agent market failed to develop, and he took a one-year, $25 million deal with Arizona at the tail end of spring training in 2024.
In his lone season with Arizona, Montgomery was terrible, posting a 6.23 ERA in 25 appearances. Owner Ken Kendrick publicly called the signing a “horrible decision,” while Montgomery himself blamed agent Scott Boras for botching his free agency.
The Diamondbacks had been trying to trade Montgomery all spring after he picked up his $22.5 million player option for 2025. Nobody was willing to take him at that salary, and the surgery obviously ends any hope of a trade.
Montgomery still has a 4.03 ERA and a track record of success everywhere he has pitched except for Arizona. However, he will also be a 33-year-old free agent coming off Tommy John surgery next winter. He faces a tough road back after a free agency move that backfired hard on both team and player.
