San Diego Padres fans held their collective breath Monday following the injury to star reliever Jason Adam.
The 34-year-old crumpled to the ground after throwing an 85-mph slider with one out in the top of the seventh inning at Petco Park in San Diego, Calif. Adam seemed to have a delayed reaction to the injury.
The Padres star executed his follow-through seemingly without a hitch and took another step as the ball was put in play. A split second later, Adam was writhing in pain as the soft grounder dribbled to shortstop Jose Iglesias.
“I felt something pop,” Adam appeared to mouth as trainers rushed to his aid.

A cart had to be brought out to take Adam off the mound. Relief pitcher Robert Suarez replaced him on the mound.
Losing Adam for a potentially long period of time would be a huge blow for the Padres. Adam has arguably been San Diego’s most reliable bullpen arm this season.
The 2025 All-Star entered Monday with a 1.81 ERA and 1.11 WHIP through 64.2 innings pitched. His 2.6 WAR ranks second on the team among pitchers, behind only starting pitcher Nick Pivetta.
Based on Adam’s reaction, the injury could very well keep him on the sidelines for an extended period of time. The Padres may need to lean more heavily on the All-Star pitcher they acquired at the trade deadline.
