Could Anthony Davis sign a 1-and-1 deal with Lakers after season?

Anthony Davis is set to be a free agent after the season once he turns down his player option for the 2020-2021 season. He is expected to return to the Los Angeles Lakers, especially considering how well his first season with his new team has gone.

But on what kind of deal would Davis return?

Davis could sign a long-term contract with the Lakers (or another team if he chooses). In a story posted on Tuesday, the New York Post’s Marc Berman threw out the possibility of Davis signing a 1-and-1 deal. The 1-and-1 to which Berman is referring would be a two-year contract where the second year is a player option.

Berman says there has been some talk around the league, and among agents, that Davis could consider that possibility. A short-term deal would give him maximum flexibility, similar to the way LeBron James has operated. The two also have the same agent in Rich Paul.

On the other hand, Davis may enjoy LA and want to lock in a long-term deal when he has the chance. Davis would be able to sign a five-year deal worth $202 million after this season.

The Lakers are 34-9 this season. Davis is averaging 26.6 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 2.6 blocks per game this season.
