Report: Cavs almost traded Richard Jefferson in 2016 for leaking title rings on Snapchat

Richard Jefferson

A lapse of judgment on Snapchat apparently almost led to Richard Jefferson’s departure from the Cleveland Cavaliers a year early.

Dave McMenamin of ESPN reported Saturday that the veteran forward was almost traded by the Cavs the summer after their 2016 NBA title for leaking their championship rings on Snapchat and angering then-GM David Griffin.

Per McMenamin:

[Jefferson] was nearly traded the summer after the championship because he revealed what the Cavs’ rings looked like on his Snapchat account before the team was ready to release them to the public. Then-GM David Griffin was so ticked that he was ready to ship him out of town, sources told ESPN, before eventually calming down and accepting Jefferson’s apology.

Jefferson’s two-year tenure with the Cavs officially came to an end on Friday when he was traded to the Atlanta Hawks in a salary dump. Though he was promptly waived by Atlanta, the 37-year-old says he does not plan to retire, so we will see where Jefferson takes his Snapchatting exploits next.
