Gregg Popovich will be away from the San Antonio Spurs indefinitely as he deals with a health issue, and a prominent reporter offered a concerning update about the situation on Tuesday.

Popovich was unable to coach the Spurs in their game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night, as he was said to be feeling under the weather. The Spurs later announced that Popovich is taking an indefinite leave.

On Tuesday, ESPN’s Shams Charania said there is “a great level of concern” surrounding Popovich.

“I’m told that it was a health issue and it was a serious health issue that the Spurs dealt with and Gregg Popovich dealt with over the weekend,” Charania said. “It was a situation Saturday night pregame that Gregg Popovich needed medical attention in San Antonio. It is still uncertain when he’s going to make it back on the sidelines for this team. There is a great level of concern around the situation for the Spurs, for Gregg Popovich.”

That update is far more concerning than the one a Spurs reporter provided on Monday.

Popovich, who will turn 76 in January, is both the oldest head coach in the NBA at the moment and in league history. There has been talk for years about him retiring, and he nearly called it a career due to health complications in 2015.

Spurs assistant coach Mitch Johnson has taken over as interim head coach in Popovich’s absence.
