The San Antonio Spurs’ thin supporting cast surrounding Victor Wembanyama got even slimmer Tuesday with the latest injury update on Jeremy Sochan.
Sochan reportedly suffered a fractured left thumb during the Spurs’ Monday loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the 21-year-old forward is slated to undergo surgery later this week. While San Antonio has yet to release a timeline for Sochan’s return, such an injury typically requires at least a month of recovery.

Sochan jammed his thumb late in the first half of Monday’s contest as he tried to fight over a screen while defending James Harden.

The injury news is a huge blow for the Spurs given that Sochan has arguably been the team’s second-best player thus far.
On a Spurs team still trying to figure out its non-Wemby core, Sochan has shown flashes as a potential building block. The versatile Frenchman has shown off a do-it-all skill set in the mold of a young Draymond Green. The Spurs experimented with Sochan at point guard last season to mixed results. But with Chris Paul in tow, Sochan has gotten a chance to shine away from the ball.
Through San Antonio’s first seven games, Sochan has been the Spurs’ second-leading scorer at 15.4 points per game on an efficient 51.2% from the field. He’s also averaged 7.7 rebounds and 3.0 assists.
