TNT is finally axing the “Players Only” broadcast, at least for the upcoming NBA season.
The news was shared on Twitter Wednesday by The Athletic’s media reporter, Richard Deitsch.
Via sources: TNT will no longer air the Players Only NBA broadcast. Turner Sports will likely do some Players Only content but as far as games for the 2019-20 season, the Players Only broadcast on TNT is no more.

Turner began the “Players Only” franchise in February 2017. “Players Only” had former NBA players in announcing and reporting roles for their telecast of games, including play-by-play.
“Our new Players Only franchise will allow us to provide a unique and compelling narrative surrounding the game through the distinct perspective and collective experiences of the former NBA player,” said Craig Barry, Executive Vice Presidentand Chief Content Officer, Turner Sports, when the franchise was announced. “We believe this original approach will offer deeper insights into the game, both on and off the court, along with broader access that will be entertaining for our passionate fans.”
The Players Only broadcasts were absolutely brutal to listen to and gave a far less professional feel to the game. They had people in roles for which they were unqualified, and it showed. They should have gotten rid of it after the half-season trial in 2017, but it’s better to do so now than later.
