Adrien Broner and Amir Khan on Floyd Mayweather undercard

Amir Khan didn’t exactly get his wish of fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr., but he will have some ties to Floyd’s upcoming fight.

Mayweather announced this week that Khan and protege Adrien Broner will both be fighting on the undercard for his May 3 fight with Marcos Maidana. Khan will face Luis Collazo, while Broner will take on Carlos Molina.

Golden Boy Promotions, which works with Mayweather to promote his fights, boasted about the strong card.

“It would be easy for us to simply put a great fight like Floyd Mayweather vs. Marcos Maidana on top of this card and leave it at that, but that’s not fair to the boxing fans that demand and deserve more,” said Richard Schaefer, CEO of Golden Boy Promotions. “So with the rest of this pay-per-view card, we’ve stacked it with an important bout between former world champions Amir Khan and Luis Collazo, the return of one of boxing’s top young superstars as Adrien Broner faces tough Carlos Molina, and an opener between J’Leon Love and Marco Antonio Periban that could produce the next super middleweight world title challenger. It will be an unforgettable night for all boxing fans.”

J’Leon Love is part of Mayweather’s Money Team and is managed by Mayweather’s manager, Al Haymon. He is 16-0 with one no contest that came as a result of him using a diuretic to cut weight last May.

Broner was being billed as the next Mayweather, but he lost his last fight in December. Broner is still every bit as cocky as ever despite the loss.

“I had minor setback but I am back on May 3rd. Everybody needs to understand that I just took a loss. I haven’t lost it,” said Broner. “I’m still “The Problem” and anyone can get it, whether you are African, Puerto Rican, Dominican, Cuban or Mexican.”

You like that? Anyone can get the problem. And you wonder why so many people are eager to see him lose.

Even though Khan didn’t get the fight with Mayweather that he wanted, he is still optimistic that it will happen.

“The fight with Mayweather will happen in the future, but I’m just going to concentrate on one style which is Collazo’s,” Khan said this week.

First he needs to beat Collazo convincingly, otherwise Floyd won’t give him the fight. But being on Floyd’s undercard will help him further build his name. I’m sure he recognizes that and knows what he needs to do to get the fight.
